Tips for Quick Recovery After Oral Surgery

oral surgery Charlotte, NC

Though you may be nervous, oral surgery does not have to scare you. Various procedures are invasive and can cause some pain and discomfort. Still, the results can be positive. The recovery periods will vary depending on the surgery. It may take some time to get back on your feet, but you can be back to your regular self if you keep some helpful advice in mind.

Listen to the dentist

Before ever going in for oral surgery, the patient and dentist will meet to discuss the procedure. During this appointment, the dentist will talk about what the person can expect before, during and after the operation. The dentist will provide important recovery information such as what the patient should and should not do. Following these recommendations will reduce the risk of injury, getting infections and having a longer recovery.

Do not rush it

Some people are impatient and want to resume their normal routines as quickly as possible. Though this may tempt some patients, the individual should not overlook the importance of resting. Patients should wait a week before doing anything strenuous. Rest and relaxation are essential. Any exertion could aggravate the wound site.

Watch the diet

There are certain foods and beverages to avoid during recovery. Hard, crunchy, hot and spicy food will be painful and may interfere with the healing process. Instead, recovering patients should focus on things they do not have to chew. Applesauce, mashed potatoes, soup and yogurt are good options. Even ice cream is a suitable replacement for other foods.

As far as beverages are concerned, avoid coffee, tea, hot cocoa and alcohol. Stick with water. Also, recovering patients should not use a straw to drink.

Keep out of the mouth

For the next 24 hours after the oral surgery, the patient should not brush near the wound site. Avoid mouthwash during this time as well. Though the person may feel compelled to touch the area, keeping objects away from the affected site is vital.

Take medication

After the oral surgery, the dentist will likely send the patient home with pain management medication. The individual should follow the dosage instructions explicitly and take the entire bottle. Once the person runs out of the medication, it is fine to take over-the-counter products too.

Self-care after oral surgery

There are also some simple things people can do to speed up recovery. Patients should keep an ice pack on the mouth as much as possible. After the first day, the person should rinse their mouth with salt water a few times a day. Doing this after meals can help too.

You can be up and running soon enough

Though recovering from oral surgery may seem like an eternity, you can help speed it up. If you follow these guidelines, you can successfully get well and return to your regular activities. Make sure you follow up with your dentist in the days and weeks after the procedure. The recovery can be difficult, but you will enjoy the results of your surgery.
